After doing some experimenting with my assassin, I've concluded that a well-played assassin SHOULD be able to beat any other class 1-on-1.
Anyway, for those of you who think they're crap, myself and 3 other assassins were ruling an arena a few days ago for a while. Just the 4 of us. No healer, nothin. But as for the effectiveness of an assassin in a more organized team... shadow step to the monk, whack whack whack, no more monk.

These "stay on the sidelines, watch your enemy, take your time, step out, regen, come back" advises are all nice and candy and might work in pvp, but imho they don't work in Canthan missions and quests....
Missions are timed and often you get ganked by mobs, quests are streat fights with hardly the room you need...
I fear the moment my asassin reaches the mainland.
Btw: I am considering going a/mes so I can use physical res or a/ele for armor of earth
Would aoe slow shadowstepping as well ?
Could not try this myself yet, so I hope somebody already did and can comment.

As/El with Armor of Earth might be OK as long as you are teleporting to/from your target and don't need to chase them. If they realize you're slow, you might have more difficulty.

For Assassins in PvE - just don't lead the attack. Let aggro get well established (1-2 sec), then pick a juicy target like a ritualist or monk and attack. Running in is ok, but a way to teleport out is fairly vital. Random teleports are not so good in PvE because you may aggro another mob, or, if you are against a wall you will likely stay there. Health is your friend; runes which knock it down are not worth it. Dagger pommels of fortitude, etc. are great.
Rangers tank stuff in PvE all the time, and their armor is only better against elemental damage. So, if firestorm starts landing around you, teleport out!
Edit: if you must use a secondary profession skill, consider 'Watch Yourself' for A/W - add 20 armor for 5 sec even with no points in tactics.

A secondary /Me is usually far superior for an assassin, you can pull off mean things with certain mesmer hexes... also the stances you can aquire are incredibly usefull in the usually predictable enviroment of GW PvE
